Yes, that’s right. If you ever played Lost Vikings back in the day then you know Blizzard’s best title is not a Warcraft, or a StarCraft, or a Diablo, or even a World of Warcraft. It’s a Lost mother f#$*ing Vikings. (Technically, Lost Vikings was originally developed by Silicon & Synapse, who, of course, became Blizzard Entertainment. )
And, now Blizzard has made the game free for anyone to download and play.
The game gives you control of three vikings who are stuck in space. The object is to use the vikings to work together to get safely through each level. It’s an addicting puzzle/action adventure game.
The main characters of the game are Erik the Swift, Baleog the Fierce, and Olaf the Stout. Erik can run fast and jump high, Baleog can kill enemies with his sword and shoot a bow and arrow, and Olaf can block laser beams with his shield.
In order to successfully complete a level you have to get all three vikings to the end of the level. However, the levels take some critical thinking to get through as you can only control one of the vikings at a time. And, as you progress, the levels get more and more difficult.
The game, along with a few others, are apart of Blizzard’s roots and were key in vaulting the now-legendary game developer to its current status. Now, Blizzard has released the Lost Vikings, along with Rock n’ Roll Racing and Blackthorne, for free and you can download it and play it right now.
All three games are available to download on Windows and Blackthorne is available for both Windows and Mac users.
Even if you don’t have a Battle.net account, you can still get access to the games and download them by going here.
It would be a dream come true if Blizzard did some kind of rehash of this classic hit. I’m not sure how they could spin Vikings in space as a MMO or dungeon crawler, but it would be awesome if they did. One can dream right?
If you were unfortunate enough to never have played Lost Vikings, I highly recommend that you download it now and give it a whirl. Not only is the gameplay fun, but the witty dialogue between the vikings is amusing to say the least.
Fun fact: Blizzard paid tribute to the Lost Vikings in the Cataclysm expansion of World of Warcraft. The Vikings can be found in Uldaman and Eric “The Swift” gives a quest.
